Scranton: Nay Aug Falls

With some heavy rain at the end of last week, Roaring Brook was living up to its name. Here is Nay Aug Falls, yesterday about noon. This is just a short distance west of the location below.

Scranton: Roaring Brook

This is the Roaring Brook in Scranton, looking east, with the Myrtle Street bridge in the background.

Lackawanna Railroad: Scranton

This is a doubleheaded runby at the Steamtown Museum, from July 1998. Headed east on the Lackawanna mainline are Canadian Pacific 2317, and Canadian National 3254.

Pittston: Dime Bank and Trust Co.

This is the Old Dime Bank and Trust on Main Street in Downtown Pittston. It's scheduled to undergo restoration in the near future.

Lackawanna Railroad: Scranton

This view from Jult,1998 shows DL&W 807 alongside Canadian Pacific 2317 in the Steamtown yard. The 807 was in town as part of the NRHS convention which was being held in Syracuse that year. A side trip came down to Scranton.

Lackawanna Railroad: Scranton

This is Delaware, Lackawanna & Western E-8 number 807 headed east out of Scranton in July 1998. This was part of a National Railway Historical Society trip. My wife and I were positioned under a stairway along Ridge Row near the University of Scranton waiting for the NRHS Special to go by.

Lackawanna Railroad: Scranton/ Steamtown Museum

This is Canadian National number 3254 backing out of the roundhouse in October 1997. The GP-9 on the left is Nickle Plate Road 514, posing as Lackawanna 514, sort of a Lackawanna-be. This former Lackawanna roundhouse is now part of the Steamtown National Historic Site.

Lackawanna Railroad: Scranton

Canadian Pacific 2317 headed east out of Scranton, on the former Lackawanna mainline, August 2000. In the background is the Lackawanna Station, and the sign for the now demolished Hotel Casey.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

This is a short bridge that crosses an unnamed creek. It's pretty much covered in vegitation. Today we went the farthest north we've gone on this line.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

We took another Sunday stroll down the Erie right-of-way this morning. This time going north towards Dunmore(and Hawley). At this point of the summer, the line is pretty much overgrown.

Pittston: A Ghost Sign

A sign for what was probably one of the many garment companies in Pittston. WP/TS not sure what it was, but note the hatpin in the logo.

Pittston: Miners Saving Bank

Here is the front of the Miners Saving Bank in Downtown Pittston. This building has been undergoing a major renovation project. This is at the corner of Broad and Main Streets, the heart of Pittston.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

This was as far as we got on our hike down the Erie a couple weeks ago. This is the junction with the Laurel Line in Moosic. We didn't go further south of this point since this becomes live trackage. This is just south of Virginia on the Laurel Line. The Erie track is on the left, the Laurel Line track is on the right.

Laurel Line: Connell Junction

Here's another view of the trolley as it runs south from Connell Junction, from June 2007.

Scranton: Nay Aug Park

This is what Nay Aug Falls looked like back in mid February, after the big snowstorm. It was quite the feat getting down the ice covered trail to get this photo.

Scranton: Nay Aug Park

It was just five months ago when the big snowstorm hit. As hot as it sometimes gets in the summer, at least you don't have to shovel the heat. This is the new footbridge over Roaring Brook when it was still under construction.

Cleveland: 415 Eagle Ave Rear.

Here is an old car we spotted behind the Cleveland Mop Manufacturing Co, on that June day back in 1987.

Cleveland: 415-419 Eagle Avenue

Here is a view of 415-419 Eagle Avenue from June 21, 1987. The Clevland Mop Manufacturing Co, and the Superior Supply Co. are in the foreground. Looming in the background is the Sheriff Street Cold Storage Co. and the Standard Oil Company tower.

Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad Shops

On our hike down the Jersey Central last week, we were able to get this view of the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad shop on Scranton's South side. This was taken from an area atop a culm bank west of the Lackawanna River. Behind the shops is Scranton's south side, and most prominently St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Pittston Avenue.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

This is the view of the top of the bridge shown below. It's in pretty rough shape. The lack of maintainance has taken it's toll. No trains have run down these tracks in 25 years, and it probably didn't get much attention in the years leading up to abandonment. We chose to cross the creek down below, rather then walk across this bridge. This is about at milepost 10.5.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

As we hiked south down the Erie right-of-way we came to this fill, which appeared to be cinders. This area probably had problems with washouts so near Stafford's Meadow Brook. This was also an area that had less foliage.

Laurel Line

We took a ride on the trolley last Friday, July 6. This is what the inside looks like. It is Philadelphia Suburban No.76.

Lackawanna Railroad

On the 4th of July we saw these gravel hoppers at the east end of Nay Aug Tunnel.

Pittston: Laurel Line Freight Station

One of the more interesting sights in Pittston is the Laurel Line Freight Station on Market Street. There's not many remaining structures remaining from the Laurel Line, but this is one of them. The passenger station was nest to this building, on the left.

Pittston: Lehigh Valley RR Station

On our visit to Pittston, we stopped by the Riverfront Park. At a point near the Water Street Bridge is this remnant of the Lehigh Valley passenger station. Not much left, just a portion of a stone archway from the lower level. Once upon a time the main LV trains ran through here, The Black Diamond Express and the John Wilkes. The last LV passenger trains ran in February 1961.

Pittston: Susquehanna River

Yesterday, Thursday July 5, we traveled to Pittston. Here is the Susquehanna River and the Water Street Bridge. Also visible is the Riverfront Park, and the Fort Jenkins Bridge, known locally as the Cement Bridge.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

On our hike down the Erie on Tuesday, we came across Milepost 11. Only 11 miles to Plains Junction!

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

This morning, July 3, we hiked a little further south down the Erie. Here is the Erie RR bridge over Stafford's Meadow Brook in Moosic.

Central Railroad of New Jersey

Probably the most interesting thing we saw along the Jersey Central, was this bridge, which would have been on a siding off the mainline. This bridge crosses the Lackawanna River, and goes over to one of the industrial buildings on the other side of the river. The Jersey Central ceased all operations in Pennsylvania on March 31, 1972.

Central Railroad of New Jersey

Yesterday, Tuesday July 2, we hiked down a stretch of the Jersey Central Rail/Trail, from Scranton, into Taylor. This was the former trackage of the Jersey Central RR that has been turned into a rail/trail. There wasn't a whole lot of exciting things to see, but we did get a photo of an old lineside telegraph pole.

Scranton: Nay Aug Park

Another view of the new bridge taken this morning, July 1. With the new bridge open, and warmer weather this area has been getting alot of park visitors. Back in mid February it was quite different.

Scranton: Nay Aug Park

Here's another one of the millstones from the old mill. There's quite a few of these scattered about.
