Nay Aug Falls

Yesterday we stopped by Nay Aug Falls. The Roaring Brook was really roaring after the big snow melt. Unfortunately more snow arrived overnight.

Steamtown

Last Saturday we spotted Canadian National 3254 in the yard. The former Lackawanna RR roundhouse and and Steamtown Museum building is visible in the background.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

After hiking back down the hillside, the sleet had turned to rain. This is looking north, near milepost 12,

Pennsylvania Coal Co.RR: Plane No.5

We made it up the side of the hill to the ruins of plane no.5. The weather wasn't the most pleasant. By the time we got up here, heavy sleet started to fall. So we didn't hang around as long as we would have liked.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

We took a hike down the Erie tracks this morning. This is an example of the large pools of water that form along the trail. In the summer this is annoying, in the winter it's worse, with all the ice. This is looking north, between mileposts 12 and 13. The tracks are on the right, and ties are visible on the right, along the pond.

Merry Christmas

A 1950's postcard of the Sterling-Lindner-Davis Company Christmas Tree in their Playhouse Square store, Cleveland Ohio. Until the store closed in December 1968 this was a tradition for generations of Clevelanders. The store boasted this was the largest indoor tree in the U.S.

Nay Aug Park: Davis Trail

The lower end of the Davis Trail, going down into the gorge. This section is always tricky to navigate at this time of the year.

Nay Aug Tunnel-2007

100 years later, the tunnel is still in use. Hurricane Diane in August 1955 caused alot of destruction in this area. The one time triple track mainline, was rebuilt as double track through here. One of the tunnel bores was abandoned at that time. This was taken yesterday morning.

Lackawanna Railroad

Yesterday we caught a Steamtown excursion train after it passed the Lackawanna Station, heading east along Ridge Row, and the University of Scranton.

An Abandoned Road

A view of Cliff Street, looking north. This is on the grounds of the Steamtown Museum. Bridge 60 is on the left. The road travels under the Lackawanna mainline, and once went to Lackawanna Avenue.

Nay Aug Park

Another view of Nay Aug Falls & Elmhurst Boulevard. This is just above the hairpin curve. The road went up this hill, turned right, crossed the Laurel Line's Dunmore branch, and the Erie's Wyoming Division. Now it's cut off by I-81. Remnants of this road on the other side of 81 are hard to find. The only trace we've found so far is the bridge abutment at milepost 14.1 along the Erie tracks.

Nay Aug Park

An abandoned section of Nay Aug Falls & Elmhurst Boulevard in Nay Aug Park. This road once crossed over Roaring Brook, looped through this section of the park, and headed east. This was once the main road to New York. This view shows part of the hairpin curve. The orange fencing on the left is just above the Lackawanna Railroad's Nay Aug Tunnel. This road hasn't been in use since the mid 1960's.

Lackawanna Railroad: Nay Aug Tunnel

The ice is starting to build up here. The west end of Nay Aug Tunnel, on the Lackawanna Railroad. Taken this morning. Some jumbo hoppers are parked from here, through the tunnel and onto the tracks on the east end. The bridge at the bottom crosses Roaring Brook, just below the falls.

Another view of the Erie's snow covered right-of-way. I don't know how often we'll be wandering around here with all the snow and ice. But it sure looks alot different then it did a few months ago.

A Ghost Sign

We spotted this ghost sign along Linden Street, at Penn Avenue last Saturday. The building is being renovated, and an old addition that was once the Busy Bee Restaurant has been removed.

Nay Aug Falls

We stopped by Nay Aug Falls this morning, The creek was running pretty good. Note the treehouse in the upper left. We didn't stick around down here for too long. This was taken about an hour after the walk through the rock cut. By this time the snow was changing to sleet.

We caught the Canadian Pacific Christmas train this morning, down in the Steamtown yard. It's supposed to depart this evening at 5:30 for Binghamton.

On our journey last week, we spotted milepost 12. We didn't think to look above the tracks for it on earlier explorations of the area.

Along the Erie

We came across this unusual sight in the Watres addition to Nay Aug Park yesterday. This area was never developed, but there is this bench, next to a rotting picnic table. We also saw some wild turkeys in this area, probably joyous that Thanksgiving is over.

A Rock Cut

On yesterdays expedition we came across this rock cut. We're not sure what this is. Might it be where the loaded track of the Pennsylvania Coal Co. RR ran?

Just below the ruins of the complex on the hill, the plane must have came up through this cut. We followed it part of the way down, but it was on the muddy side, and we worried we might not have a way out at the bottom.

A big find today. We hiked up above that stone wall/foundation north of Milepost 12, and found what appears to be the remains of Pennsylvania Coal Company railroad; Plane No.5. Quite a large complex they had up here.

Nay Aug Falls

The falls were really roaring yesterday with the heavy rain on Thursday, and the snow that was falling almost all day.

Laurel Line: Luna Park

This is the "subway" under the Laurel Line tracks at the Luna Park station. The Laurel Line spent over $7,000 to add this station to the Dunmore Branch in the spring of 1906. Ridership, and park attendance, never reached the levels predicted and the park closed at the end of the 1916 season. It still looked like fall back here yesterday, dispite all the snow.
