Pennsylvania Coal Co Railroad: Plane No.5

Towards the back side of the ruins is this circular area, with some loose bricks laying around. I'm thinking this was either a smokestack, or maybe some kind of water retention pond for the boilers.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

We walked up the Erie tracks yesterday, spring is starting to set in along here. A few more weeks and it will be like a jungle over here. This is just north of milepost 14.

Lackawanna Railroad: Scranton

Yesterday we spotted this unusual piece of equipment along the Lackawanna tracks by the Petersburg Silk Mill. It's a small trailer on flanged wheels, used to haul ties. The railroad is replacing a number of ties along the line, and this must be what they use to haul them around.

Nay Aug Falls

Nay Aug Falls, about noon today. The lack of rain recently has reduced the Roaring Brook to a trickle.

Nay Aug Park: Watres Addition

Last Sunday we spotted this stone foundation the the Watres Addition of Nay Aug Park. Not sure what this is from, but it's on a rather small square footprint, just south of the stone lined pathway that runs up from the Erie tracks.

Laurel Line: Near Milepost 3

The trolley headed north, near milepost 3, from last Friday morning.

Yet another view of the ruins of Plane No.5. This was in operation from 1850 to 1885.

Lackawanna Railroad: Scranton

Yesterday we caught these D-L locomotives running light, headed east along the DL&W mainline. This view is from the Erie's Wyoming Division. I-81 is visible at the bottom, and Scranton's Petersburg neighborhood is in the background. The locomotives are about to cross Myrtle Street.

There seems to be some sort of an opening in the foundation on one of the plane buildings. We also saw another one of these. We're not sure what this was used for.

Nay Aug Falls

Nay Aug Falls, about noon today. Roaring Brook hasn't been roaring much lately with it being so dry the last week.

Laurel Line: Stafford Meadow Brook Bridge

About a half hour later, we caught the trolley headed northbound, crossing the Stafford Meadow Brook Bridge. This bridge is just south of milepost 3.

Laurel Line: Connell Junction

Caught the trolley this morning, about 10:45, by the old bridge abutments at Connell Jct. The trolley is headed south, to Montage Mountain.

This cut comes up the side of East Mountain to the top of Plane No.5. This view looks toward the top.

Among the ruins of the plane, are the remains of an old shack. The shack doesn't fit in with the rest of the ruins. I'm wondering if this shack was where one of the more reclusive residents of Scranton once lived.

Nay Aug Falls, this morning, about 10:30. Not too many people in the park today, due to the damp chilly conditions.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

A view of the rock cut between mileposts 14 and 15, from last Sunday. I'm not sure what the red markings on the tracks are for, they just appeared a couple months ago.

Laurel Line: Unknown Object

Not sure what this was from. It's along the Laurel Line's Dunmore Branch, near the Luna Park station. Is this a footer from the station? or something else?

A view of the walkway that led down from the station, to the passageway under the tracks. The park would be on the right, and the station on the left. Evident is illegal dumping which is unfortunetly prevelant in the area.

Laurel Line: Dunmore Branch, Luna Park

This is the remaining stretch of Laurel Line right-of-way near the Luna Park station. Luna Park closed at the end of the 1916 season, and the Dunmore Branch was abandoned at the end of 1945. This view is looking north. The top of each end of the passageway under the tracks can be seen to the right and left of the tire pile.

Along the Laurel Line

An old stone culvert, under the Erie tracks, along the Laurel Line's "Over the hill" branch.

Luna Park: Scenic Railway

This is the ledge where the Scenic Railway once ran. Under the larger trees are some concrete remains.

Erie Railroad: West Junction Branch

A lineside pole along the Erie's West Junction Branch. This path, on the right, leads down from the Erie's mainline, to Bunker Hill Street. The house is along Matthew Avenue in Scranton.

Laurel Line

A retaining wall along the Laurel Line's "Over the Hill" branch. This is below the Erie tracks, and above I-81.

Luna Park: Footbridge Remains

This is the other part of the Luna footbridge, on the Luna Park side of Roaring Brook. This is just a few feet to the right of the larger remaining footer. The DL&W tracks are down below.
