Lackawanna Railroad: Nay Aug Tunnel

The train seemed to rush passed us at a great rate of speed.

Lackawanna Railroad: Nay Aug Tunnel

We also caught Canadian National 3254 blasting out of the east end of Nay Aug Tunnel, about 11:15 this morning, bound for Moscow.

Pennsylvania Coal Co. Railroad: Plane No. 5

Another view of the trough where the gravity railroad cables once were. This was last used in 1885.

Along the Laurel Line

Along the Laurel Line are quite a few of these third rail insulators. I have yet to see one that is fully intact. Although some are in better shape then this one.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

In some places the growth is so thick it almost blots out the sun.

Pennsylvania Coal Co. Railroad: Plane No.5

I believe this might be the right of way where the track would have started to head down the side of the mountain, headed towards No. 6 plane, Dunmore. Just beyond this area there is some major erosion on the hillside.

Pennsylvania Coal Co. Railroad: Plane No.5

I have no idea what this might be. But after our experience with the bees down by the old bridge abutments along the Laurel Line, I didn't want to poke around too much. Lest we disturb some kind of wildlife.

Along The Erie

We spotted several frogs in a small pond near the tracks. This is the only one who wanted his photo taken.

Erie railroad: Wyoming Division

As the summer begins, the tracks near West Junction are starting to become a jungle.

Nay Aug Falls

A view of Nay Aug Falls, along with a fisherman, about 11 o'clock this morning. Roaring Brook isn't quite living up to its name this week.

Pennsylvania Coal Co. Railroad: Plane No.5

A view of the trough, in which we think cables once ran. This is looking south.

Pennsylvania Coal Co. Railroad: Plane No.5

Last week we spotted what appears to be an old section of a boiler, or maybe a 1920's hot water tank.

Nay Aug Park: Watres Addition

We went back over by this stone foundation. Still not sure what this was either.

Nay Aug Park: Watres Addition

One of the things we spotted was this. Not sure what it is, but it doesn't look too old. I don't think this area was ever developed by the city.

Nay Aug Park: Watres Addition

We stopped off in the Watres Addition yesterday. There is probably about 25 acres of woodlands up here. This is in the area east of the Erie, and west of Elmhurst Boulevard. This area is cut off from the main section of Nay Aug Park by Interstate 81. Probably most Scrantonians have never been here, or even know about it.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

We took a hike up the Erie tracks yesterday. The foliage is getting heavy in the big cut between mileposts 14-15.

Nay Aug Falls

Nay Aug Falls, just after noon today. The park was crowded today, having your three year old wading in the brook above the falls is not recommended.

Pennsylvania Coal Co. Railroad: Plane No.5

One of the more interesting discoveries was this millstone.

Pennsylvania Coal Co. Railroad: Plane No.5

We took another hike up to the ruins of the plane yesterday.

Laurel Line: Connell Junction

About 40 minutes later, the trolley makes its return trip back to town. This is on the south end of the old bridge abutments.

Laurel Line: Connell Junction

Last Friday we caught the trolley headed south, just north of the old bridge abutments.

Nay Aug Falls

Nay Aug Falls, about 11:30 this morning. Roaring Brook wasn't doing much roaring today.

Friday, June 6, 2008

Pennsylvania Coal Co. Railroad: Plane No.5

An interesting find is this piece of heavy wire cable that split this tree.

Pennsylvania Coal Co. Railroad: Plane No.5

We hiked up to plane no. 5 this morning. We think that cables for the plane went through this trough. If you follow this back to the cut, it would go right down the center of it.

Laurel Line: Connell Junction

The trolley passing the old stone bridge abutments at Connell Junction.

Meadow Brook Crushed Stone Co.

A view of the rock crusher, at the ruins of the Meadow Brook Crushed Stone Co. This is just east of the Laurel Line tracks in the Meadow Brook Valley.

Monday, June 2, 2008

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

A view of the Erie's Wyoming Division, looking south, from yesterday morning. The tracks are on the left.

Nay Aug Park: Davis Trail

The end of the Davis Trail in Nay Aug Park. The snow and ice are long gone from here now.

Nay Aug Falls

Nay Aug Falls, just before noon today. After yesterdays storm, Roaring Brook was really roaring.
