Laurel Line: Connell Junction

Philadelphia Suburban 89, southbound at Connell Junction this morning. The physical junction is long gone now. Once upon a time the "Over the Hill" branch of the Laurel Line came down the hill on the right, near the pole. This is roughly a mile south of the Stafford Avenue Bridge over the Laurel Line tracks.

Lackawanna Railroad 565

A view of the ongoing cosmetic restoration of Lackawanna 565. This Locomotive was built in Schenectady by ALCO in 1908 for the Lackawanna. Later it was sold to the Dansville & Mount Morris RR in 1936, who operated the locomotive through the late 1950's. It passed through several owners after that, eventually ending up in Scranton in 1985.

Jersey Central Freight Station

The Jersey Central Freight Station on Lackawanna Avenue in Scranton. This was built in 1890-91. The Jersey Central mainline was once at the bottom of the hill. This station was also used by the New York, Ontario and Western.

The east side of the building. This was once where the tracks were located. Remains of the freight platform are clearly visible. Also visible is where "New Jersey" was painted over "Pennsylvania" in the short lived Central R.R of Pennsylvania" scheme.

Cleveland: Hippodrome Theatre

This photo by Robert Runyan shows the main Euclid Avenue entrance on November 28, 1952.

The Hipp, as it was known, opened on December 30, 1907 as a vaudeville house, at 720 Euclid Avenue. It had a massive stage, with six floors of dressing rooms on each side. Originally it seated over 4,000, on twin balcony's, making it the second largest theatre in the U.S. For most of it's existence it ran films continuously from about 11 AM til closing, usually around 11PM. The theatre also had a second entrance on Prospect Avenue. It was the last of Cleveland's first run houses when it closed in the spring of 1980, to make way for a parking lot.
