Cleveland Stadium

Today is the 80th anniversary of the first game at Cleveland Stadium, on that day the Philadelphia Athletics beat Cleveland 1-0, Lefty Grove was the winning pitcher. This photo is from July 25, 1993, Cleveland beat Seattle 11-9, Joey Belle hit two home runs.

Allen Theatre: Uriah Heep

Uriah Heep was on Friday July 28, 1972 at the Allen. White Trash (the Apple Records group) were supposed to open. People were calling and asking “is that Edgar Winter’s White Trash?” “No it’s not.” White Trash were in some sort of barroom brawl in Chicago, and drummer Bobby Ramirez was killed, so they were unable to appear. Damnation, the local group also appeared. For some reason the usual group we used as ushers were unavailable, so we scrounged up some people, That bunch of ushers were the worst, most of them quickly vanished into the crowd once the doors opened. At the end of the night only about 2-3 of the flashlights were returned. The Allen had no working air conditioning, and it was hotter then hell in there. It was a rowdy night, one of the torchlights on the east mezzanine was smashed by some bozo. Smitty and I tackled some guy who was about to toss one of those big brass poles over the side of the mezzanine. The show was briefly stopped when a bunch of people climbed into one of the false boxes on the house right side. One of the more amusing incidents was a group of people climbing a vertical ladder alongside the stage that lead to the roof, when the top guy peeked over the top and saw a policeman there, he jumped down a rung causing a chain reaction, along with a few bruised fingers.

Allen Theatre

The auditorium of the Allen Theatre in Cleveland's Playhouse Square in October 1971. The Allen was built by Jule & Jay J. Allen who owned a Canadian theatre circuit, it was designed by C. Howard Crane, and opened on April 1, 1921. It closed as a film house in May 1968 and was later used for rock shows until 1976. The theatre restoration group, the Playhouse Square Association presented their first show, the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, here on November 21st, 1971. In 1976 the lobby was converted into a restaurant, and a year later the auditorium was converted into the Lazerium. During the 70's the theatre was the scene of a number of legendary rock shows, Alex Harvey, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Rory Gallagher, Jeff Beck, T Rex, Hawkwind, Miles Davis, Suzi Quatro, Earth Wind & Fire, Iggy & The Stooges, Lou Reed, Donovan, and Parliment- Funkadelic to name a few. I spent a good amount of time working and playing in this place. It was recently radically transformed into a performing space for Cleveland State University.

Lackawanna Historical Society

Palace Theatre
