New Years Eve

Can't remember when we last went out for New Year's Eve.

The Hotel Winton later became the Pick-Carter Hotel and is currently an apartment building. From the Plain Dealer, December 31, 1921.
Wille's Music Box was on the second floor of the Loew Building, from the Plain Dealer, December 31, 1931.
Chef Boiardi's, behind the Western Union office on 9th Street, from the Plain Dealer, December 30, 1934. Hector Boiardi is later known as Chef Boyardee purveyor of prepackaged Italian foods.
The Mayfair Casino (Ohio Theatre) from the Plain Dealer, December 29, 1935. The Mayfair was a short-lived operation in the transformed Ohio Theatre, closing in 1937.
From the Plain Dealer, December 23, 1973. The New Year's Eve parties at Playhouse Square were something of legend. I think it was in 1975 when a bus-pan filled with ice and champagne somehow got delivered to me....

Nickel Plate 514

NKP 514 along Ridge Row, November 25, 2011. A shame there's been no Christmas Trains here again this year, other parts of the country seem to have no problem with them. The Park Service even ran the usual ones in the Cuyahoga Valley, but not in Scranton.

A view of WinterFest on the Square last week. We've been avoiding crowds, so I barely popped over to this.

Lackawanna Avenue Clock

The taxpayer funded clock still isn't working, I've lost track of how many years it's been. It's really a symbol of the contempt our elected officials and the local news media have for the citizens of the city. It's all a big joke, I can't remember when a mayor of Scranton had a negative news story, and that includes the guy that abruptly resigned and pled to multiple felonies the following day. That was just another ha-ha Scranton joke on the news.

Remember Pearl Harbor

 Eighty years ago today....

Plain Dealer, December 8, 1941.
The attack was really a radio story, films of the attack didn't circulate until a couple months later. The Telenews was a newsreel theatre, they played a number of newsreels and selected shorts in an hour long program. These places were where the news junkies of the war years would congregate. The Telenews also had a radio lounge where you could hear the latest news from the war fronts, or from around the corner. from the Plain Dealer, February 4, 1942.
War Bond booth, Roxy Theatre, New York, from Motion Picture Herald, December 26, 1942.

Playhouse Square

An article celebrating the first steps towards saving Playhouse Square, fifty years ago today.

From the Plain Dealer, December 1, 1971. Note the misspelling of "Loew's."
Playhouse Square in the early 1970's was pretty much a ghost town once the office workers went home for the day. Few thought the theatres were worth saving, from the Plain Dealer, February 7, 1972.
