Merriman Smith was in the press car and quickly grabbed the radio phone, he dictated numerous takes to the UPI bureau, much to the consternation of AP's Jack Bell who repeatedly demanded to have a turn on the phone.  When Smith finally handed over the phone, it went dead. At 12:34 PM CST(1:34 EST) UPI teletype machines in newsrooms across the country started ringing like crazy. On this sheet the UPI operator in Chicago is telling everyone to get off and clear the wire. The AP meanwhile put out several erroneous reports, the worst ones being that Lyndon Johnson was wounded, and a secret service agent was killed. It took AP well over an hour to correct these false reports.

People react with shock and disbelief, here girls leave St. Peters High School at 18th & Superior and go to the adjacent St. Peters Church at 17th & Superior. ( From the Cleveland Plain Dealer, November 23, 1963). As for me they announced that "The president was hurt" and there would be a special mass, eventually we were all sent over to the church for the mass. It was almost dark when I got home that day.
