Nay Aug Park: Brooks Mine

The entrance to the Brooks Model Coal Mine. At one time this was open to the public. I'm not sure how long ago that was, but we've never had the opportunity to go inside.

I know this is a rather old entry but just found it this morning while looking for pics of the Brooks Mine to show a friend.

I believe this was closed down around 1977 or so due to being structurally unstable; I was in it once, probably around 1974-75, with my brother and grandmother (I'd have been maybe 6 or 7). Memory is fuzzy but I recall the walls being painted plaster to resemble an excavated mine, and lights hanging on bulbs strung along the way. For many years the engine and several wood/steel mine cars sat on tracks outside and to one side of the mine entrance; I was last there in 2005 but can't for the life of me recall if they were still there then.

Off to the side there are still several mine cars, I'll have to either dig out some photos, or get some new ones soon.

I thought that there was a small train that took you through the mine and there were pictures on the walls as you went through (I think but maybe we walked it) but at the end was a dummy dressed like a coal miner that I thought was cool. This was in the early 60's
