Laurel Line: Connell Junction

The trolley headed north, back to Scranton, passing Connell Junction, from last summer.

As a lad in the 30s I roamed the woods in Connell's Junction. There was a swimming hole located there called "The Crusher" Some of the boys called it "Bare Ass Beach" As the LaurelLine cars passed we'd get in the water to hide our nakedness. In the woods area was an old female recluse named "Rosie Posie" She lived in a tin clad shack and had a legend that was written up in the Scranton Times upon her death in the late 30s or 40s. In that era, Meadow Lake near the St Mary's cemetery was a favorite spot complete with bath house and refreshment stand. Back further into the woods and along the Erie Railroad was an area we called "Little Virginia". A good spot for picking huckleberries and avoiding rattlers and copperheads. Further up that mountain side, we'd reach (I think) number 5 dam where we'd try to catch fish but never succeeded. I almost drowned one day from swimming in that cold water due to cramps. One of my pals helped me swim to shore.I am deeply pleased to find this site and it fills me with nostalgia about the old days.
