Captain Colin P. Kelly was killed in action on December 10, 1941, just three days after Pearl Harbor. On the mission Kelly's B-17 bombed the Japanese cruiser Natori. Upon returning to Clark Field in the Philippines Kelly's plane was shot down by Japanese Zeros, Kelly stayed at the controls allowing some of his crew to escape. Later, Kelly was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. His widow appeared at numerous War Bond rallies during the war.
