Warner & Swasey ad from Newsweek, March 2, 1942.
Warner & Swasey was once a major machinery manufacturing company located along East 55th Street, at Carnegie Avenue. The company was founded by Worcester Warner and Ambrose Swasey in 1880. The partners had side by side houses along Prospect Avenue, one of which still stands. The company manufactured lathes, heavy construction equipment, such as Gradall excavators, gun sights for the military, and even telescopes for observatories. The company started going downhill in the late 1960's and was acquired by the Bendix Manufacturing Company in 1980.
