Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the fire that destroyed the Grand Lobby of Loew's Ohio Theatre. The fire started at the candy stand in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 5, 1964 and was contained to the lobby, extensive smoke and water damage was prevalent throughout the rest of the theatre. Loew's officials would later estimate the damage at $500,000. A new modern lobby was constructed and Loew's Ohio reopened on Christmas Day 1964 with Mary Poppins.
