Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

On our journey last week, we spotted milepost 12. We didn't think to look above the tracks for it on earlier explorations of the area.

Along the Erie

We came across this unusual sight in the Watres addition to Nay Aug Park yesterday. This area was never developed, but there is this bench, next to a rotting picnic table. We also saw some wild turkeys in this area, probably joyous that Thanksgiving is over.

A Rock Cut

On yesterdays expedition we came across this rock cut. We're not sure what this is. Might it be where the loaded track of the Pennsylvania Coal Co. RR ran?

Pennsylvania Coal Co. RR: No.5 Plane

I wonder if this is where the tracks ran. There seems to be a big space between these sets of ruins.

Pennsylvania Coal Co. RR: No.5 Plane

Just below the ruins of the complex on the hill, the plane must have came up through this cut. We followed it part of the way down, but it was on the muddy side, and we worried we might not have a way out at the bottom.

Pennsylvania Coal Co. RR: No.5 Plane

A big find today. We hiked up above that stone wall/foundation north of Milepost 12, and found what appears to be the remains of Pennsylvania Coal Company railroad; Plane No.5. Quite a large complex they had up here.

Nay Aug Falls

The falls were really roaring yesterday with the heavy rain on Thursday, and the snow that was falling almost all day.

Laurel Line: Luna Park

This is the "subway" under the Laurel Line tracks at the Luna Park station. The Laurel Line spent over $7,000 to add this station to the Dunmore Branch in the spring of 1906. Ridership, and park attendance, never reached the levels predicted and the park closed at the end of the 1916 season. It still looked like fall back here yesterday, dispite all the snow.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

The Rock Cut during this mornings snow. It was a cold hike through here this morning.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

An early taste of winter along the Erie. This is looking south from around mile 14.3.

Laurel Line: Pittston

A portion of the Laurel Line right-of-way, between Market Street and Pine Street. Looking south towards Wilkes-Barre.

Laurel Line: Pittston

The Laurel Line freight house, looking west down Market Street, from last summer. The passenger station would have been just below the freight house.

Meadow Brook Valley

Wetlands in the Meadow Brook Valley, just east of the Laurel Line tracks. The Erie runs along the hillside in the background. From last month.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

The tracks are pretty well overgrown along this stretch of track.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

On our hike down the Erie tracks yesterday, we noticed a disconnected section of track. Not sure why this was done. This is in between West Junction and Sadler Avenue.

Steamtown: Rail Expo

Philadelphia Suburban no.76 at the boarding platform. Usually we're down in the Meadow Brook Valley when we see this. This is where the trolley begins/ends its run to Montage Mountain and the Lackawanna County Stadium. Visiting Amtrak equipment is on the right, and Bridge 60 Interlocking can be seen at the far end of the boarding platform.

Canadian Pacific 2317 winds its way through the yard. The former DL&W Locomotive Shops are in the background.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

In the rock cut, last Sunday, looking south.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

This is part of a bridge abutment that carried Nay Aug Falls & Elmhurst Boulevard over the Erie tracks at mile 14.10. Unfortunetly that would put the elusive milepost 14 under a pile of debris that has been dumped from an empty lot off Route 307.

Steamtown: Rail Expo

Some private varnish at Steamtown's Rail Expo. This is on the Lackawanna mainline, behind the Steamtown Mall.

Scranton: Luna Park

I'm not sure what this is. It's on the Luna Park grounds, in the north-west corner, just above the DL&W tracks. On a map of the park, this would be where the Scenic Railway curved. I'm not sure if this is part of that, or something else.

Scranton: Luna Park

We made a return trip to Luna Park today. We haven't been here since last fall, this is the base of the footbridge on the Luna Park side of Roaring Brook. Someone has placed some kind of dog statue on top of the base.

Laurel Line: Connell Junction

The trolley headed north, back to Scranton, passing Connell Junction, from last summer.

Laurel Line

A view of the old bridge abutments. I'm not sure why there is that long platform on the left. The Laurel Line had a station around here, on the left, somewhere just behind the pole. Also visible are remains of the second track, just to the left of the existing one.
