Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

Not too far from the bridge is this overturned boxcar. The tracks were lifted in this section years ago, but the boxcar remains.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

Took a hike up the Erie with a friend last Friday, up to the Rock Junction area. Here is a view of the bridge over Roaring Brook, and the Lackawanna tracks. This has been unused for at least 35 years.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

Heading into the big cut. After having been up and down these tracks dozens of times, things are drastically different. You can compare this photo of the cut with at least a dozen other ones on here taken over the last couple years.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

This is along the Erie, looking west from near the big cut, facing back towards the small bridge, which is way in the distance.

Nay Aug Falls

Nay Aug Falls, just after noon today. Some of the snow, and ice buildup is visible at the bottom of the trail.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

Looking west from about a quarter mile below Sadler Avenue. The Watres Addition to Nay Aug Park is above the tracks here, on the left.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

Later in the day we stopped off at River Street. This is the area at MP13, which is visible just left of center. The brush has been cut back going down to about MP12.6. The path along the tracks has been turned into a dirt road. This area is quite different then it was six weeks ago.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

Took a hike yesterday with a friend down the Erie, from above Rock Junction to near MP16. So far this seems to be to extent of the pipeline work. This would be about on the northern end of the scrapyard. We didn't want to follow the tracks beyond this point.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

Another view, just east of Sadler Avenue. This is roughly around the West Junction area.
I have more views of the Wyoming Division on my other site:

In the cut the brush has been cleared from along the left hand side.

Approaching the big cut, at about MP14.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

This is an access road built from a lot off of route 307. The tracks are barely visible. This is just east of where that big pile of junk was, a portion of which is still visible, just below that stack of pipes near the center of the photo.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

The right-of-way along the tracks has been cleared. This is looking east from just west of the bridge over route 307.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

We took our first trip up the Erie in six weeks. There appears to be some sort of pipeline being built along the tracks. The area now looks a lot different then it did just a few weeks ago. This would roughly be at about milepost 14.5.

Nay Aug Falls

Nay Aug Falls, at noon today. A lot of the snow and ice have melted, but the bottom of the trail is still pretty icy.

Nay Aug Park Zoo

It looks like this tiger was enjoying the warm spell.

Nay Aug Park Zoo

Last Sunday it was warm enough for some of the animals to be out.

Nay Aug Park Zoo

A rather bleak looking Zoo with the overcast skies. This is now know as the Genesis- Nay Aug park Wildlife Center. Although it looks bleak, it was warm enough yesterday for some of the animals to be out.

Nay Aug Park

The snow is quickly melting here with the warmer temperatures. Hopefully the worst has passed, and there wan't be too many more heavy snow/ice events.

Nay Aug Park

Again this week we didn't go down to the falls, due to icy conditions. It was tricky enough getting over to this viewing platform. The warmer weather is melting off the snow, but there's alot of ice underneath.

Huber Breaker: Ashley Pa.

A view of the Huber Breaker in Ashley, from about 10 years ago. This breaker, once owned by the Glen Alden Corporation opened in 1939, and was last operated in 1976. I have more views of this on my other site:

Buddy Holly, J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson, Ritchie Valens

From the front page of the Scranton Tribune, February 4, 1959.

The Biggest Show of Stars for 1958: Scranton

On October 16, 1958 the Biggest Show of Stars tour rolled into Scranton. This must have been one of the earlier Rock and Roll shows to play Scranton. The bill reads like a list of Rock and Roll legends. Buddy Holly & the Crickets, this was the last tour with Jerry Allison and Joe B. Mauldin. Clyde McPhatter the lead singer of the original Drifters, The Olympics, Dion & the Belmonts, along with the others. This was the tour where Buddy and Maria drove in their new Cadillac, with Joe B. and Jerry Allison driving a yellow Desoto station wagon.

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe this was the ony time Buddy Holly appeared in Scranton.

I would like to hear from anyone that was at this, or similar shows in Scranton.

Nay Aug Park

Snow and ice surround the water slide. We usually don't come over to this more developed area of the park. But with all the icy conditions yesterday we didn't want to wander to far off the beaten path.

Nay Aug Park

A rather forlorn ferris wheel waits for spring.

Nay Aug Park

A view of Nay Aug Gorge from this morning. We didn't go down to the falls today. The lower half of the train is coated with ice, and we didn't want to fall on the way down.
