Bus Stop

This bus stop, on Lorain Avenue, & West 140th Street, was shot up last week in the middle of the afternoon. After school target practice for Cleveland School students I suppose. Days later, the damage lingers.

Absolute Legends And Collectibles

We stopped by Absolute Legends And Collectibles, 2007 Carabel Avenue, the other day, neat place with a lot of stuff. This is a bit out of my realm, but it was crowded, so they must be doing something right.

Lower Mall Contest Winner

The winner of the first television set to be given away as a prize in Cleveland. Not sure of the wisdom in this, although there was only one station on the air at the time, and it didn't start it's broadcast day until late afternoon.

From Boxoffice, May 22, 1948. I assume Mrs. Agnes Myers' trips to the Lower Mall became fewer once she had her telly set up.

Thoreau Place

New townhouses with a great view of the NKP under construction. Too bad they won't be done in time for UP 4014's passage next month. These would be great railfan homes, only $480,000 quite the bargain.

Radio Cleveland

A few things I came across while looking for something else. WHK was in this location until the mid-1970's.

The front of this building is mostly unchanged since the 1949 renovation. From Broadcasting, October 17, 1949.
From Broadcasting, October 17, 1949. The coveted television license never materialized. The former Metropolitan Theatre, became known as the WHK Auditorium, and was an inexpensive place to stage a concert, although in somewhat of a dicey location. Today the auditorium is the Agora nightclub.
From Variety, February 7, 1951.

Dave Mason

The recent passing of Dave Mason had me reminiscing about the first rock show I worked at the Allen. It was my second day there, Sunday, March 26, 1972. The audience of 2,860 all looked like the bad guys on Adam-12. When the house lights went out, the marihuana was lit, for a brief few seconds the auditorium would be illuminated by hundreds of matches and lighters. When I asked a policeman about this, I was told, "not a big deal kid." Quite a different message than school and telly. I had no idea what loud was until that night, the sound was quite deafening, making hard to communicate with co-workers.

From the Plain Dealer Action Tab, March 17, 1972.
