The New Lackawanna Avenue Bridge opened for traffic this morning! Traffic was light, and the weather was gloomy.

Lackawanna Avenue Bridge

Looking towards West Side across the New Lackawanna Avenue Bridge, from Last Saturday morning. This bridge replaces the previous span which opened in early 1942. The previous bridge replacement project spelled the end of trolley service to West Side. The Jersey Central Freight Station is seen at right.

Eckley Miners Village

Looking down the main street in Eckley. October, 1998. The town only has about three streets, one is open to the public. A handful of people still live in town. The state wants to close the town and museum for the winter. This will force the remaining residents to move.

Eckley Miners Village

Eckley Miners Village from October, 1998. The coal breaker which looms in the background was built for the 1968 Richard Harris film "The Molly Maguires." The house in the foreground has wood siding covering up Brick-Tex siding, which was done to back date the structures that were seen in the film. After the film, the town became a state museum.

Laurel Line: Dunmore Branch

Along the Laurel Line, on the track bed, looking north. At the right is an abutment from the Erie Railroad, in the distance on the left is the Erie's Dunmore Locomotive Shops. The Dunmore Branch continued a short distance north from this point. The heavy growth makes it hard to navigate. The branch was abandoned in October, 1945.

Laurel Line: Dunmore Branch

A stone retaining wall along a small portion of the Laurel Line's Dunmore Branch. Judging by the age of this, it could date back to the gravity railroad era. This is located just off the north end of Joseph Street in Dunmore.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

Looking towards the west another bridge pier can be seen. This section of the Erie comes after the meeting of the Haines (aka East) Junction and West Junction branches. This line crosses over the Laurel Line, and the Lackawanna Railroad, eventally heading into the Erie's Dunmore Yard. The Dunmore Branch of the Laurel Line was abandoned in October 1945. This area also is pretty heavily overgrown! In the distance the Erie's former Locomotive shop building can be seen.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

Just off the north end of Joseph Street in Dunmore are remains of where the Erie Railroad crossed over the Laurel Line's Dunmore Branch. This photo was taken from the former right-of-way of the Laurel Line.

Armistice Day

Civil War monument in Monument Park, Carbondale Pennsylvania. It looks like it could use a little work.

Armistice Day

On November 11, 1918 the Great War ended. This monument in Scranton's Nay Aug Park lists the names of those killed in the First World War.

Erie Railroad: Wyoming Division

Along the Erie, at Montage Mountain Road, the Lackawanna County Visitors Center stands out against the overcast sky. This section of the Erie isn't as overgrown as the area further east.

Along the Laurel Line

Just behind the foundation shown below is the floor of a building.

Along the Laurel Line

Ruins of a building at Virginia on the Laurel Line. I still haven't figured out what this once was. Postwar photos show this as a shell of a building, no roof, no windows or doors. Today this foundation remains, along with some other concrete remnants, and the poured concrete floor.

This morning we hiked down the Erie tracks, we made it to the vicinity on Milepost 10. We were looking for it, but didn't find it. This view is looking west, probably about a mile above Rocky Glen Park.

Scranton's New Park

The Mattes Street Tower as seen from the new park.

Scranton's New Park

A long dormant signal, silhouetted against the murky sky. I wonder what the plans are for the bridge over Cedar Avenue are? Those railings are on the ornamental side, certainly worth preserving.

Scranton's New Park

When the park is completed, this will be the main entrance along the 500 block of Lackawanna Avenue.

Scranton's New Park

For the last three Saturdays, we've been trying to get some decent photos of the construction of the new park in Downtown Scranton. At least it wasn't raining this past Saturday, but it was quite overcast.

This park is somewhat similar to the New York Central Railroad's High Line Park in Manhattan. This is along what was the approach to Lackawanna Station in Scranton. The park is behind the buildings along the 500 block of Lackawanna Avenue. This view is looking west, the Steamtown mall Garage is in the distance. Word on the street is that sod will be laid here later this week.
