St. Michael Church

St. Michael Church, 3114 Scranton Road, last Saturday morning. The parish was established in 1881, with the present church building dedicated on November 20, 1892.

The head of the St. Michael statute that was once on the pedestal above the front entrance, between the spires. The statue fell onto the front steps one morning in the mid-late 1960's.
The St. Michael statue can be seen in this undated photo from the Cleveland Public Library.

Bearden's Steakburgers

We stopped by Bearden's, 19985 Lake Road, a couple weeks ago. We haven't been here in about thirty years, it's a lot more modern inside, almost fast-foody. No waitresses as in the days of yore, instead, ordering is done off a touch screen. The food is excellent, but the ordering is a bit off-putting, especially if you're an older person.

An old menu on display.

This bus stop, on Lorain Avenue, & West 140th Street, was shot up last week in the middle of the afternoon. After school target practice for Cleveland School students I suppose. Days later, the damage lingers.

We stopped by Absolute Legends And Collectibles, 2007 Carabel Avenue, the other day, neat place with a lot of stuff. This is a bit out of my realm, but it was crowded, so they must be doing something right.

Lower Mall Contest Winner

The winner of the first television set to be given away as a prize in Cleveland. Not sure of the wisdom in this, although there was only one station on the air at the time, and it didn't start it's broadcast day until late afternoon.

From Boxoffice, May 22, 1948. I assume Mrs. Agnes Myers' trips to the Lower Mall became fewer once she had her telly set up.

New townhouses with a great view of the NKP under construction. Too bad they won't be done in time for UP 4014's passage next month. These would be great railfan homes, only $480,000 quite the bargain.

New Cleveland Theatres Planned

This article gives an indication of the scope of the theatre construction boom of the early 1920's.

From, Moving Picture World, March 27, 1920. The Playhouse Square theatres are here as are the Capitol, Keith's 105th, Loew's Park, Detroit, Regent, Corlett, Astor, to name a few. The Lyceum is on here twice, Loew ended up only building one west side house.
